Corona Virus Update 4/3

We are 28 days since our first confirmed case of Covid-19 in Connecticut
4914 positive cases, up 1090 since yesterday
131 deaths, up 19
909 currently hospitalized, up 82
20,015 tested, up 1715 (64% of those tested today were positive)
The Governor’s office projection is for a surge in Fairfield County of April 30th, New Haven County May 10, Hartford County and Eastern CT of May 24th. That would be the peak, not the end.
They estimate that we will need 12,000 Covid beds at the peak and 4,000 vents.
We currently have 7,000 beds. They believe they can find ways to increase bed capacity.

That seems to conflict somewhat with this projection
Becker’s Hospital Review reports that “Peak demand for hospital resources due to COVID-19 is expected by mid-April in the U.S., according to an analysis (here) from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle. The study presents estimates of predicted health service utilization and deaths due to COVID-19 for each state in the U.S. if social distancing measures are maintained.” About one-third of the states will hit peak capacity in the next two weeks, others in May.
By state the projected date of peak resource demand: April 8, New Jersey; April 9, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Vermont; April 11, Delaware, Washington; April 15, Alaska, Connecticut, District of Columbia; April 16, Massachusetts; April 17, Alabama, Colorado, Maine, New Hampshire; April 18, Pennsylvania; April 19, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee; April 20, Illinois, Nevada, Rhode Island; April 21, Mississippi, North Dakota; April 22, Minnesota; April 23, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Utah; April 24, Georgia, New Mexico; April 26, Arkansas, California, Idaho, Montana, North Carolina; April 27, Arizona, Wisconsin; April 28, Kansas, South Carolina; April 29, Maryland; May 1, Iowa; May 3, Florida, Hawaii; May 4, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming; May 5, Oregon; May 6, Texas; May 16, Kentucky; May 20, Virginia; May 21, Missouri.

Either way,
One question I have is how do we increase skilled Healthcare Professional to take care of all those beds?
Especially if we don’t protect them from becoming ill?

A study published by the CDC on Wednesday shows:The evidence of presymptomatic transmission in Singapore, in combination with evidence from other studies (9,10) supports the likelihood that viral shedding can occur in the absence of symptoms and before symptom onset.
Presymptomatic transmission might occur through generation of respiratory droplets or possibly through indirect transmission. Speech and other vocal activities such as singing have been shown to generate air particles, with the rate of emission corresponding to voice loudness

From NPR
Doctors are becoming increasingly concerned about patients with symptoms of COVID-19 who test negative. Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a Yale professor of medicine, says a study from China showed a 30% rate for false negatives -- and it could be higher in the U.S. His advice: “If you’ve likely been exposed to COVID-19 or have symptoms, assume you have the infection even if you test negative

There have been questions about Healthcare Workers responsibilities during a pandemic. This is from the American Nurses Association on the Nurses Code of Ethics during a pandemic.

This is from a personal fried, Donna Phillips, a nurse and a leader from Alaska:
I’m floored and grateful that more than 150,000 people signed this petition to use the Defense Production Act to make ventilators and get personal protective equipment to healthcare providers. We have incredible momentum, and I just wanted to give you a quick update.
The president has said he’s going to use the Defense Production Act, but has been slow to do so. He keeps going on TV and questioning the need for ventilators and PPE.
In fact, twice this week Trump accused healthcare workers of stealing PPE. Honestly, I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. I have never been so personally offended by a president. We are putting our lives on the line and begging for help. Nurses and healthcare workers across the country are starting to get sick and some are dying; meanwhile, the president goes on TV and accuses health professionals on the frontlines of being selfish and stealing.
We’re already at 150,000 signatures. Can you help me and my colleagues get the PPE we need by sharing this petition on social media?  Here's a sample tweet you can copy and paste or click here.
Healthcare workers are trying to protect themselves and save lives at the same time, while Trump accused them of stealing PPE. More than 150k people told Trump to do his job and make PPE and ventilators though the Defense Production Act. The AFT, my national union, and AFT President Randi Weingarten have been working hard for healthcare workers, educators, and all of our communities. They have put together some great resources both for members and for our community allies. Feel free to check these out as well. www.aft.org/coronavirus
Thank you again for signing and sharing. On behalf of nurses and health professionals around the country, thank you for standing with us.
Thanks
Donna Phillips

During this difficult time, we’re hearing about the struggles of frontline healthcare. The stress is real and often overwhelming. Here’s a happy nursing moment. Two days ago, I delivered my 1000th baby!  I’ve been waiting for this milestone for some time. The fact that it came during this time makes even more special.

My brother T Reed sent this from Illinois. It’s a song for the brave workers on the front lines of this pandemic. It made me weep.

Be safe everyone.
