Corona Virus Update 6/5

Yesterday was the 88 day since the first confirmed case of Covid in Connecticut and the 15 day of reopening. We reached 2 milestones yesterday.
We surpassed 4,000 Connecticut deaths (4007)
We dropped below 400 hospitalizations for the first time (373)

Yesterday we had an AFL-CIO Connecticut call with the Governor. 3 union members, one who is an AFT CT hospital nurse, were on the call. All three told the Governor how they had been exposed to Covid-19 at work and become ill. Then, adding insult to injury. Their Worker’s Compensation cases were denied by the employer. (As union members, they have access to lawyers so the denials are being appealed)
Our member told how he had admitted a patient without any PPE, as it was not provided to him. The Patient became sick that evening. The Patient’s test came back positive. Even after this, our nurse was given only surgical masks, 4 of them and told  “make them last.”  He became sick within a few days. He is now on short term disability. His Insurance will run out in 6 weeks. His Wife has used up all her sick and vacation time to take care of him. He says he can either pay is rent on the 1st, or buy food. He is now on oxygen.

The other stories were equally distressing.

Right now, the burden of proof is on the employee to prove they obtained Covid at work. We believe that those working is hospitals and other high risk situations should not bear this burden. Thankfully for these people, they have a union, with representatives and lawyers to assist them. I worry people, especially those not in a union, will be discouraged from filing. Worker’s compensation should cover any medical costs, lost income, and death benefits.

We don’t know the long term effects of Covid yet. Please file if you become sick.

Our union family grew again this week as our receptionist, Nicole, welcomes Luca Gene Shea, 7lbs 7  oz. 22 inches long.

Be well,
John
