Corona Virus Update 5/9

I want to thank the delegates to the AFT Connecticut Convention today. We had a tough ask. We asked for a modest dues increase so we could fend off attacks that are urging austerity state, municipal and hospital budgets because of the Covid pandemic. None of that was a concern when we started  our budget process. We have had frank and open discussions over the past month or two where the entire spectrum of opinions were expressed. In the end, the overwhelming majority of delegates agreed that we are all in this together and the needs of a nurse today may be the needs of a paraprofessional, a teacher, or a state worker tomorrow. We are the AFT, and we are one family.

I would ask you to listen to at least the first 20 minutes of this WNPR podcast. Our own Martha Marx RN is on and it explains much better than I can what our concerns are with PPE.

Today is 63 days since our first confirmed case of Covid-19 in Connecticut
1301 are currently hospitalized, down 35 today
2932 have died, up 58 today.

Be safe,
John
