Corona Virus Update 5/14

On an AFL-CIO call today Representative Joe Courtney spoke about the “Heroes Act,” the next stimulus bill in Congress. The House will vote on it tomorrow. It contains some things that will be important to workers, and in particular, Healthcare workers. It may change some and it will still have to get through the senate, but these are some of the highlights.

Employers over 500 were unable to take advantage of the 80 hours of paid time off and all healthcare institutions were able to exempt themselves. This would correct this.
Workers laid off would subsidies to pay for COBRA insurance
There is money for funding for State and municipal budgets.
OSHA Would be required to establish an emergency standard for airborne pathogens
Hazard pay for frontline workers!
$90Billion for education
Money for the post office

We are 68 days from the first confirmed Covid case in Connecticut. We are 6 days from the beginning of reopening.
Hospitalizations are down 55 today (1103)
Unfortunately, 94 more have died (3219)

It was a pleasure to be on two calls with the Backus Nurses today, a weekly event in this pandemic.
This has become a great way for members to get updates and call with questions and concerns.

Be safe,
John
